Somewhere between a doll and a dog, Margate Exhibition
Somewhere between a doll and a dog is an unflinching, confessional, and diaristic archive of transness. Shot across the UK, Europe, the USA and the Philippines, the photobook positions transness as a fluid state that transcends borders, binaries and Western frameworks.
The three-year visual diary blends archival family portraits, journal fragments, and ephemera alongside fleeting encounters, moments in hyper-masculine spaces, and tender images of friends and lovers to articulate a language for the unfiltered textures of trans and queer life.
Presented in its first solo exhibition, the publication takes on a spatial form. The gallery functions as a testing ground for newly forming considerations, rather than a finalised presentation of work. Inside, the curation is deliberate and carefully considered: white-framed photographs rhythmically spaced; objects become artefacts; and fabrics are gently placed. The space becomes a meditation on the visceral, emotionally charged experience of the publication.
Extending beyond the architecture of the white cube, the exhibition unfolds into the surrounding square and alleyways. This expansion echoes the photobook’s refusal of simplification or fixed definition, as a site of constant transformation - encompassing the boundary-less nature of transexuality, the passage of time, and the continual evolution of not only the body of work, but Ezekiel’s practice.
